Thyroid: The thyroid’s major function is to control your metabolism through the production and release of metabolic hormones. In ayurveda, hormones, and metabolism feel under the doshes which is pittadosha. The thyroid functions are as I would with the concept of agvi i.e. digestive fire.
The thyroid gland is one of the most important and sensitive and endocrine glands. It easily responds to stevers, hence the global incesedary hypothorodism is rising rapidly.
Hypothyrodism: From diabetic perspective an underactive thyroid is a kapha condition the qualities of kapha one heavy and slow which align with the symptoms of an underactive thyroid, slow metabolism or mangaagri is common amongst company individual and those with a kapha imbalance.
Signs of hypothyroidism

Causes: As a major cause of thyroid conditions is stress from the automatic perspective stress contributes to an imbalance of vata dosha Which is involved in all disease processes. When stress sterns from high tejas or overwork it burns ojas or immunity and vitality. Causing autoimmune conditions to manifest. From the ayurvedic perspective, all three doshes are involved but hypothyroidism can be seen as primarily a kapha imbalance. The symptoms of slow metabolism, weight gain, heaviness, depression are all kapha qualities. This heaviness or coating by kapha dosha and excess madadhatu prevents pitta dosha from its cellular grandfunction, thus improving age.
Treatment approaches of ayurveda
All the treatments in ayurveda is individualized and based on imbalance of doshes and on the root cause of the illness. First, we work to remove the cause of illness which is shodhar chikitsa i.e. panchakarma and by lifestyle modification by shodhar chikitsa with medicine.
All individuals will benefit from strengthening agu and digestism and incorporating kapha balancing measures.
In addition to ayurvedic diet of panchakarma, herbs can be very beneficial. In a clinical trial, when given Ayurvedic herb, every single patient showed improvement, around 35% showed excellent improvement, while marked improvement was reported by 50 to 55% of the patient’s moderate improvement in around 60%.
But it is important to consult an ayurvedic practicioner before taking ayurvedic medicine.
Even though thyroid conditions are becoming more common, ayurveda offers solutions beyond taking synthetic thyroid medication. The holish approach will adverse the root cause of the disease heal your mind, body and spirit.
